The University of North Alabama is accepting applications for the following position: Systems Administrator
General Description
This position is responsible for the daily operation, maintenance, and support of all server operating systems, application software, and appliances, as assigned. Additional responsibilities include: integrity and security of all server and appliance operating systems; designing and implementing server redundancy, survivability, protection, backup, and recovery systems; verifying continuing need for server hardware and software support agreements; determining the benefit versus risk of new software and hardware implementations; and conducting technical reviews of all special projects interfacing with or having a potential impact on university server-based applications.
Essential Job Duties
• Manage and maintain computer accounts and user access within a Microsoft Active Directory environment;
• Manage and maintain ERP-related or appliance-based Linux environment;
• Assist senior systems engineer(s) in maintaining and monitoring Microsoft Systems Center products;
• Create, manage, and maintain access to shared storage and related documentation;
• Install, upgrade, and maintain various educational and business applications on campus servers and appliances;
• Install, upgrade, and support, for end-users, various educational and business applications used in a networked environment;
• Implement and ensure backup and recovery strategies for campus servers and appliances;
• Diagnose and solve hardware and OS/software issues on campus servers and appliances;
• Interface with end-users in various departments to define requirements during a project’s design stage;
• Establish and maintain technical documentation and diagnostic software libraries of installed servers and appliances, including network configurations and hardware components;
• Perform all other duties as assigned.
Additional Duties
• Assist team members in implementing, upgrading, and maintaining campus applications such as email, calendar, portal, etc.;
• Assist team members in installing, maintaining, and supporting integration between Directory, ERP, Portal, and Learning Management systems;
• Assist team members in creating, supporting, documenting, and securing file shares for campus users;
• Analyze new functionality delivered by supported educational and business applications to determine feasibility;
• Work with appropriate personnel to configure, manage, and maintain load balancers;
• Work with appropriate personnel to configure and maintain single sign on (SSO) between third-party applications and university resources;
• Assist with secure sockets layer (SSL/TLS/HTTPS) certificate generation and maintenance;
• Assist, as needed, to troubleshoot connectivity problems between users and networked applications;
• Read literature, attend conferences, participate in training, and perform other related activities in order to understand the leading edge developments in IT-related fields;
• Work with vendors to retrieve software/hardware renewals and/or upgrade price quotes;
• Represent the department and university at a variety of on- or off-campus meetings or conferences;
• Adjustment of hours involving evening and/or weekend work is required.
