Mental Health Counselor
Position Summary Information Position Responsibilities
St. Catherine University Counseling Center, St. Paul, is currently accepting applications for a Mental Health Counselor. This is a .75 FTE position. The hours for this position will be spread primarily throughout the academic year (September 1st to May 31st). Some evening and weekend hours may be required. In addition, some hours may be allocated for summer coverage. This position provides Mental Health Counseling services to assist St. Catherine University Counseling Center in fulfilling its mission of promoting the healthy psychological, and mental health of students thereby enabling them to overcome psychological barriers to academic goals and learning.
Primary Responsibilities:
* Direct services to undergraduate and graduate students including initial psychological assessments, short-term individual therapy, crisis assessment and intervention, and group workshops.
* Indirect services to the campus community including clinical consultations, psycho-educational presentations, and other outreach activities .
* Other duties include professional record keeping/case management .
* Weekly staff meetings, bi-weekly case consultations, and other departmental and division meetings, events, or committees.
The successful candidate will have experience and possess understanding in the following areas:
* Contemporary practices in the delivery of counseling and psychological services.
* Knowledge of ethical and legal issues related to mental health practice in a university setting .
* Multicultural competency and familiarity with needs of diverse and underserved student populations such as Hispanic, Black American, African, Hmong, and those who identify as LBGTQ .
* Crisis response and clinical risk assessment.
* Outreach/Presentation skills.
* Consultation with faculty, staff, and larger campus community regarding student mental health issue Electronic records (Titanium) and timely/organized documentation.
* Multidisciplinary practices and approaches that engage other student support services such as the Student Affairs Office, Health Center, the Learning Center, and/or the Career Center.
* Application and use of technology to enhance delivery of programs and services.
* Effective communication and interpersonal skills and A collaborative spirit and ability to flexibly manage the professional demands of a challenging caseload while maintaining a positive/healthy perspective.
Position Qualifications
Requirements:
* Master's Degree in clinical or counseling psychology or similar field with 3 years of post-degree counseling experience Required.
* Doctorate degree in clinical or counseling psychology or similar field; licensed or license eligible; at least 1 year post-degree experience in college or university setting preferred.
* Knowledge of theories of student development, personality development, and human behavior.
* Ability to accurately assess mental and emotional health issues, including suicidality and dangerousness.
* Skills in case conceptualization, treatment planning, psychological intervention, and developing effective and appropriate therapeutic alliances with clients to assist clients in meeting mental health goals.
* Ability to effectively manage crisis situations, make appropriate action plans, and coordinate appropriate level of support for clients in crisis.
* Multicultural competencies and ability to work effectively with clients from various ethnic, racial, gender, sexual orientation, religious and/or spiritual backgrounds, age or disability status.
* Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing to a wide variety of constituents, including parents, faculty, administrators, and personnel from the medical, psychological and psychiatric field.
* The ability and willingness to work collaboratively on clinical and non-clinical projects related to Counseling Center mission and vision.
* Commitment to the Catholic mission of St. Catherine University and sensitivity to the unique spiritual and/or religious concerns of St. Catherine students and community.
Strongly Preferred:
* Strong psychotherapy skills with knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas: eating disorders, DBT skills, mindfulness-based approaches, assessment and treatment of personality disorders.
* Strong passion for and demonstrated skill in addressing diversity and multicultural awareness in a university environment.
* Demonstrated understanding and clinical application of the intersectionality of personal identity with mental health. Strong consultation skills with campus and/or key stakeholders.
* Strong public speaking skills, presentation skills and interpersonal skills.
* Individuals with experience in higher education and/or doctoral degrees in counseling or clinical psychology with APA-approved internships (especially internships in college counseling setting will be given preference).
