Chesterfield County's Department of Utilities is seeking a Principal Plant Operator. Under general supervision performs work related to the operation of a Class I wastewater treatment facility.
This includes but is not limited to the following: monitor and adjust process control equipment; observe process trends; perform preventative maintenance; monitor and calibrate instrumentation; record and report operational data; collect process monitoring samples; perform field analytical tests; inventory chemicals. Perform other work as required. Must be 18 years old to apply. Successful candidate will possess a high school diploma or GED; associate's or bachelor's degree in a science or engineering related field preferred; three years of experience in wastewater treatment plant operations preferred; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Must possess a Commonwealth of Virginia Class I Wastewater Operator's License. Knowledge of current wastewater treatment principles; biological nutrient reduction; NPDES reporting requirements. Ability to perform manual labor and heavy lifting required including lifting fifty (50) pounds, walking or standing for 30 continuous minutes. Commonwealth of Virginia Class I Wastewater Operator's License is required for the advertised classification and salary range. Applicants with a Class II, Class III or non-licensed status will receive consideration at lower level plant operator classifications and salary grades/ranges. College graduates with a degree in biological, chemical or engineering science may start as a Class III. Other non-licensed applicants will start as an Unlicensed Operator. Unlicensed Operators and licensees with lower than a Class I license will receive salary increases after passing higher license exams. Good driving record required. Must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required. A Chesterfield County application is required and must be submitted online by deadline.
